About this opportunity
What fellows do
Fellows spend their time on one focused piece of work: a dataset, a benchmark, a model experiment or a study on how AI performs in African languages. You work alongside our research and data teams, use the language data behind Mansa, and aim for a result you can publish or ship.
What you get
Mentorship from African Languages Lab researchers and engineers
Access to curated, expert-validated text and speech data in African languages
A clear project with a real outcome, from a paper to a production feature
A network of researchers, linguists and native speakers across the continent
Our track record
Through our collaborative research programme we have mentored 15 early-career researchers. Their work fed into our ACL 2026 paper, which covers 40 African languages, 19 billion tokens and 12,628 hours of speech.
Who should apply
Graduate students, early-career researchers and engineers with an interest in natural language processing, speech or data. Speaking an African language is a strong plus, but not required.
How to apply
Apply through the Swarm Intelligence Hub. Tell us about yourself, the language or problem you want to work on, and any past research or projects.

Have a project in mind?
We build and deploy language AI with partners across Africa and beyond. Tell us what you need, and our team will reply within one working day.
